Ethan Milovsorov is interested in relating Buddhist concepts through contemporary painting. This is balanced with a more traditional practice which draws heavily from the academic approach taught up until the mid to late 20 the century. He aims to develop his drawing and painting fundamentals to a high level and to use those skills to create work from a historic perspective, large multifigure religious scenes, as well as making work that sits firmly in a contemporary setting, exploring concepts such as stillness and simplification, reminiscent of zen art. Working from life has become a prominent feature of his practice, both for its benefits in developing one’s techniques, but also the more conceptual idea of capturing an extended and changing moment, rather than a photo already frozen.
Quote from Richard Schmid the great American painter:
“Your power is in how critically you can observe your subject, the patience and care with which you paint it.”
